National Insurance inspector (latterly deputy area manager) for five years, Martin then spent nine years with the Institute of Payroll and Pensions Management as Training, Consultancy and Helpline manager, representing employers on a variety of government consultation committees and eventually rising to director before joining Wolters Kluwer UK in January 2005. Martin is a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians.
