Energy use and waste should be the first factors considered by commercial property owners who would like their premises to be more eco-friendly.

Paul Edwards, chair of the British Council for Offices’ Environmental Sustainability Group, made the comment in a speech urging firms and people alike to check and closely monitor the amount of power they are using. He argued it is entirely possible to make offices greener.

Edwards argued that those firms and individuals who start monitoring energy use will soon wonder why they have been paying so much for power bills when it is easy to save money by using less power.

He added: "If you start to measure first, then you can understand what you are actually using. That goes likewise for understanding waste and paper you use."

The UK Green Building Council and the British Property Federation have recently released a joint statement pointing out that key figures in the energy industry have requested that the Government keeps the promises it has made with regards to energy efficiency.
